He paid homage to aging war veterans on Wednesday.
Before the battleship USS North Carolina and a sizeable crowd in Wilmington, North Carolina, President Trump commemorated the end of World War II. A number of veterans of that war were present at the event, many of them in their 90s or even 100.
He designated Wilmington as the first American World War II Heritage City, telling those present it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and they were a witness to history. “A lot of cities wanted this… and you got it,” he said. A storm was brewing and thunder was heard in the background, causing the president to say, “God is saluting you,” and that the battleship shows “we don’t tear down the past.”
The World War II Heritage City designation recognizes the countless contributions of the men and women who stepped into the workforce to support America’s successful campaign during World War II.
According to military officials, 243 warships were built in the Port City, where prisoner of war camps also housed Nazis. Nearly 250 soldiers from Wilmington lost their lives in that war.
